If you’ve ever had a week or two before your period where you suddenly feel like your entire world has collapsed and the only reasonable solution that you can come up with to that is jumping off the nearest bridge … it’s not normal… but it is PMDD.
One of the hardest, least-talked-about symptoms of PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) is the intense emotional crash that happens in the luteal phase.... a depressive, dysphoric crash that is so severe ….that it can create suicidal thoughts or hopelessness that often turn your life upside down only for those feelings to disappear almost as soon as your period begins.
I Call It The Week Of Hell (or 2)
There you are. You’re living your life.
You’re doing okay.
You’re handling things. Ish. You're handling things ish. But still, you're handling them.
Then suddenly out of nowhere ... it hits.
A heaviness.
A sadness that drenches your existence.
A dark, sinking feeling that whispers,
“You can’t do this. You’re too much. Everything is falling apart. And everyone hates you.”
And logically?
You know nothing catastrophic happened. Maybe. Depending on the severity of the PMDD episode.
But emotionally?
It feels like the ground fell out from under you, whether you know it or not.
You snap.
You cry.
You shut down.
You feel like the worst version of yourself ...a version you don’t recognize and definitely don’t identify with. A real Jekyll and Hyde situation that leaves you wondering, who the fuck even are you?
You feel hopeless.
You feel empty.
You feel like disappearing and hope like hell that you do.
Then....days later...
your period starts…
and suddenly, magically, the darkness lifts.
You breathe.
You feel normal-ish. Because what is normal anyway?
But you feel mostly like yourself again.
You look back and think,
“What the hell was that? Whoooo the hell was that?”
That’s PMDD.
🌙 Why PMDD Can Make You Feel Suicidal Before Your Period
PMDD is not “bad PMS.”
It’s a severe hormonal sensitivity that impacts:
-
mood
-
sleep
-
stress response
-
impulse control
-
emotional regulation
-
energy
-
thinking
-
connection
-
nervous system stability
- and more
During the 10–14 days before your period, your brain becomes extremely sensitive to the natural drop in estrogen and serotonin.
This hormonal crash can cause:
✔ Intense depression
✔ Feelings of worthlessness
✔ Intrusive suicidal thoughts
✔ Emotional numbness
✔ Irritability, rage, or hopelessness
✔ Feeling like a burden
✔ Disconnection from yourself
and so much more
What Helps
✔ Tracking your cycle
This is one of the most powerful tools.
Patterns bring clarity.
Clarity brings safety.
And simply knowing when the spiral is coming...can help you prepare for it.
✔ Naming it
Saying “This is PMDD, not reality” can pull you out of the spiral faster.
✔ Support
Someone who can remind you of your own patterns is priceless.
✔ Environment changes
Lowering stress, lowering expectations, and lowering stimulation helps your nervous system survive luteal storms.
🆘 If You Ever Feel Unsafe
If you ever hit a moment where you feel like you might act on those thoughts ...not just think them, please reach out for support immediately.
You can contact your doctor, therapist, or...if you need immediate help...your local crisis hotline.
In the U.S., you can call or text 988.
If you're outside the U.S., your country has local equivalents.
You deserve safety.
You deserve support.
You deserve to feel okay again.
And remember.... you will feel okay again ... often within hours of bleeding starting.
before you go
PMDD is powerful, painful, and difficult to navigate ... but please remember....
You’re not dramatic.
You’re not weak.
You’re not “crazy.”
You’re dealing with a real, cyclical disorder that can make even the strongest people crumble temporarily.
But PMDD comes in waves.
And waves eventually break.
You always come back.
Your clarity comes back.
Your strength comes back.
You come back.
Every. Single. Time.
