    What is the luteal phase?

The luteal phase is the two-week period between ovulation and your actual "period".  After the egg is released, progesterone rises to prepare your body for a potential pregnancy, while estrogen dips, which can lower serotonin and destabilize your mood. This combo triggers all the classic luteal-phase fun: bloating, cravings, irritability, fatigue, anxiety, brain fog, and hypersensitivity to… well, everything. Your metabolism speeds up, your body temperature rises, and your nervous system becomes more reactive, making small stressors feel bigger than they actually are. If no pregnancy occurs, progesterone crashes, the uterine lining sheds, and your period begins, usually bringing instant relief from the emotional and neurological chaos while replacing those with cramps.

The body goes through a lot during this time and the crazy part....we're just supposed to go on pretending like all of this isn't even happening.

take a look at this list below

    Hormonal Changes
    • Progesterone rises - causes sleepiness, bloating, mood changes.

    • Estrogen dips - affects serotonin and emotional balance. (mood)

    • Serotonin drops - irritability, sadness, cravings.

    • Basal body temperature increases - you may feel warmer or sweatier.

    • Metabolism increases - your body burns more calories and wants more food.

    • Cortisol sensitivity rises - stress feels bigger, louder, sharper.

    Physical Symptoms
    • Bloating (progesterone relaxes muscles - slower digestion)

    • Breast tenderness or swelling

    Cognitive (Brain) Symptoms
    • Brain fog

Cycle-Specific Signs You’re in the Luteal Phase

    • Your cervix lowers.

    • Cervical mucus becomes thicker or sticky.

    • Your body naturally preps the uterine lining for a potential pregnancy.

    • If no pregnancy occurs, hormone levels crash & your period begins.

    You might find yourself:

    • questioning every relationship

    • feeling weirdly nostalgic

    • crying at commercials

    • wanting to rearrange your entire life

    • overanalyzing texts from three months ago

and if you have PMDD, you can add even more symptoms the list while simultaneously increasing the severity of all of the ones listed above.

Then… Your Period Starts, and Suddenly You’re "Fine" Again...aside from those cramps that may feel like a baby dinosuar is chewing apart your isnsides....but other than that..you start to feel more like yourself...the version of you when you're not in your luteal phase.

This is why cycle awareness is a superpower .... because once you know the luteal demons are temporary, they may seem slightly easier to manage.

In Short: The Luteal Phase Is Not For the Weak

    It’s messy.
    It’s emotional.
    It’s confusing.
It's a mini- roller coaster that you don't even want to ride.

But understanding it makes you feel less like you’re “losing it” and more like you’re just in a predictable, hormonal clusterfuck.

And if you live with PMDD?
Multiply all of this by 10, add a lot more tears, remove all serotonin, sprinkle in existential dread, add in a period of suicidal ideation and 500 more pounds of rage...and boom .... you’ve unlocked the deluxe edition. That's PMDD in a nutshell, but you can view 50 PMMD Symptoms Here.
