These mini CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) tools are designed to help you manage the emotional storm that often comes with PMDD, Ā without needing an hour-long session or a therapistās office. Think of them as quick mini resets for your brain.
Ā
1. Call it what it is.
Ā
Say out loud: āThis is luteal. Temporary.ā
Ā
Reminding yourself that this phase is cyclical (and not forever) helps interrupt catastrophic, Ā doomsday thinking. Itās a way to ground your emotions in reality and remind yourself that calm is coming, even when you canāt sense it.Ā
Ā
Ā
2. Label Your Thoughts: remember feelings arenāt facts
Ā
Try saying:
āThatās a ādoom-story.ā Not a fact.ā
When intrusive or negative thoughts spiral, label them for what they are⦠stories, not truths. They are not absolutes. They are often a symptom and its important to call them as such to help us serperate them from reality. This gentle separation between you and the thought helps reduce its power.
Ā
3. Opposite ActionĀ
If your brain says āfreeze,ā do something ⦠anything ⦠even if itās just coloring.
Other Examples:
- Take a shower
- Sip some water
- Step outside for a breath
- put away 13 pieces of clutter that are weighing you down
Tiny movement = tiny victory. Opposite action interrupts negative emotional inertia and helps signal safety to your nervous system.

5-4-3-2-1 Grounding
Bring yourself back to now by naming:
- 5 things you see
- 4 things you feel
- 3 things you hear
- 2 things you smell
- 1 thing you taste
This quick sensory āroll callā anchors your body in the present Ā which is especially helpful during PMDD anxiety or overwhelm.
